A few nights ago, I started attending a weekly bible study session. I must admit, it has been quite a while since I read/studied the bible. I do regularly reflect on isolated scriptures, but it’s been far too long since I sat with the bible and just absorbed. Anyway, I would like to share some of the sessions/thoughts with you guys. Feel free to weigh in with your reflections!
That night, we discussed Abraham and how his dedication to God was tested. He was instructed to create an alter && sacrifice something he really loved – his son. Throughout their trip, his son inquired as to where they would find the lamb for sacrifice- Abraham responded that God would provide a lamb for sacrifice, although he knew the sacrifice would be his child. Nonetheless, he trekked forward with his assignment in mind. Abraham built his alter and instructed his son to lay upon it. It wasn’t until the very last moment, when Abraham drew his knife, that a ram appeared just before him.
The pastor stated that one of the lessons here was that we must be tested in order to have a testimony, but that the test isn’t because God needs to see your dedication, but at times you need to be reminded of your own submission to Him. More than that, the pastor reminded us that God is a jealous God and we are to love no one more than Him. In asking Abraham to make the sacrifice and knowing of the love for his son, Abraham’s submission was a statement that his love for God was stronger.
If you would like to explore the text yourself it is: Genesis 22: 1-16
